What to Know When Hiring a Travel Wedding Photographer
Whaddup, my pals? A while ago, I shared Amanda and Connor’s engagement photos (check it out here if you missed it) and now, the big day has arrived! It’s Amanda and Connor’s wedding day! Ever since I photographed Amanda’s first wedding a few years back, we’ve become attached at the hip. I also captured their engagement session — check that out here! Travelling to Madison, Wisconsin, for her wedding was a no-brainer, but it got me thinkin’: How much do to-be-weds know about travelling wedding and elopement photographers?
SO, in case you were wondering, here’s what to know when hiring a travel wedding photographer and questions I get a lot:
Question: Do you only travel to “destination” weddings? My answer: No! I travel all over. While the destination weddings are always super cool, my travel is a lot more local or is focused on where the couple lives. Did you know you could hire a photographer from anywhere? Cool, right?
Honestly, the least important consideration for myself and other travel wedding and elopement photographers is location. We will most likely happily come to you! Here’s what else you should be considering:
Does their style match yours? Capturing your wedding in the most authentic way is easiest if we understand and vibe with each other’s style. Also, do you like their personality? Are they at the opposite end of the energy scale or are you right on the same plane?
Experience level — take it from an old pro: experience is important! Not necessarily at the venue/location, but at travelling for a gig in general. This can be super stressful and, in international locations, involve some complicated stuff, so it’s good to have someone who’s seasoned in flying and navigating these situations.
Investment: ah, the all-important cost! The visual team is already going to be a huge part of your wedding budget and will be worth every cent. I always think it’s worth it to book your favorite photographer, no matter how far away they are! Your photos will be your direct connection to remembering your big day, so make sure they’re everything you dreamed of.
One last point to be sure you cover is getting reviews or referrals from others who required them to travel. This is so important! Not just reviews from local folks, but travel clients specifically, because the job is so different. I travel all over the southwest (and to Wisconsin pretty often, apparently) and to Hawaii for travelling engagement, proposal, wedding, and elopement sessions, so if you’ve got questions about what all this involves, know that I’ve got your back!
