Unconventional Reception Ideas
I know what you’re probably thinking: “Are there even options outside of a traditional wedding reception?”
Oh honey, yes. Yes there are!
I have been wanting to photograph unconventional receptions since I started as a wedding photographer way back in 2013. I have had some ideas along the way, and I am honestly just waiting for someone to ask me, “What do you think my reception should be?” Because the possibilities are endless!
When thinking of unique reception ideas, your main consideration should be how many guests you're having and who your guests are. For example, if you're going to have a super active reception with lots of agile activities, you don't want people who have mobility issues to feel left out. There's absolutely nothing wrong with just hiring a DJ and dancing – that's what John and I are doing because we're pretty laid-back people who just want to celebrate with our friends. However, we do have a lot of surprises that are going to happen throughout the ceremony and reception, so we're putting our personality in that way and making our day unique in smaller, more frequent ways, rather than big events.
The possibilities are really endless when it comes to creating unique experiences at your wedding. For example, if you were really interested in hiring a fire-breather, you can just do that! Or if you wanted to hire some aerial dancers to perform, suspended from the ceiling, while you're doing your first dance – you can just do that. You should really feel empowered to make the wedding whatever you want it to be!
I also highly encourage couples to consider what their personal interests are. So if you and your fiance are really into wine, you can hire a sommelier to come to your wedding reception and take your guests through a wine tasting of wines from regions that you and your partner have visited together. This would be so personable to your relationship, and it would also be incredibly unique, and you know your guests would never forget it! Similarly, my own wedding photographer actually even hired a magician for her wedding because she loves magic so much!
Personally, I really want to photograph a reception at a bowling alley. I can just imagine the fun photos of a couple all dressed up, slinging bowling balls toward a bunch of pins. The portraits and fun moments that could be captured there just get me so excited – especially if black light bowling is an option! I know it could sound childish, but can you imagine a bunch of adults with a whole bunch of alcohol, going mini golfing or playing laser tag? That sounds amazing!
You should also consider where you’re having your wedding as a way to involve the local culture. For example, if you are having a destination wedding, make the most of your destination! Let’s say you chose to elope in Costa Rica with 20 guests. After the ceremony, have your guests change into casual clothes and take everyone zip-lining. You could even make the zip-lining destination the location of your post-ceremony dinner!
I hope this blog encourages you to think outside the box and do what feels right for you and your partner! If it does and you’re ready to have some amazing photos of your perfect reception, get in touch and let’s do this!
