How to Pick Your Wedding Colors

This is such a fun topic to think about, and there are three main factors to consider when picking your wedding accent colors! These are the colors you’ll use to decorate your venue and dress the people in your wedding party.

Think About the Season

First thing’s first – what season is your wedding in? This is especially important if you are a Midwestern couple because you know that seasons determine a lot of your wedding factors. You should be thinking about if your ceremony is going to be indoors or outdoors (since receptions are usually indoors or under a tent). There are also some obvious choices you wouldn’t make – for example, you probably wouldn't do summer colors in the winter, and you wouldn't do winter colors in the summer. Bright pinks and purples when it’s 30 degrees and snowing outside? I mean, you do you, boo, but it might be hard to find florals that match that color scheme in that season!

Spring and fall can kind-of be interchangeable. You'll tend to see a lot more jewel tones in the fall, whereas you’ll tend to see a lot more pastels in the spring. This is just because of the way the seasons affect the florals that are in bloom.

Think About Your Venue

The second thing for you to consider is your venue. Where are you getting married? Where is your ceremony? Where are your pictures going to be held? If you’re going to be outside in the summer, the trees and grass are going to be green, so don't put your people in green because they're going to just blend right into the background! If you have an indoor venue with a bright white wall behind you, don't put your people in beige or lighter blue because they won't stand out as easily in the photos. Contrast is usually a good thing! It isn’t uncommon to have your wedding party in all black against a bright wall, but I wouldn’t recommend putting them in similar colors as your background.

Think About What You Like

The last thing you really have to consider is – what do you like? Being a wedding photographer, navy and burgundy were a really popular color combination in 2018 and 2019. So now, I'm turned off from that combo. I never considered that combination for my own wedding because I had seen it so much in those years. For our wedding, we're doing a navy and champagne combination because we have a lot of gold decorative elements that we really like, and we both look really good in blue. It was really just our personal preference, and navy and champagne isn't a very common color combination that I've seen in weddings. So we’re trendsetters, no brag. :)
