How Long After Your Wedding Should You Go on Your Honeymoon?

That post-wedding vacation is one of the first times you get to be alone together after getting married, so I know you’re probably itching to make it happen! The honeymoon can sometimes be seen as taboo because of what it implied back in the olden days, but now, I view honeymoons as a celebration of your relationship after crossing a huge milestone!

My opinion on when to take your honeymoon is this: you should figure out when your honeymoon works into your schedule. For me, I am self-employed, and my schedule relies primarily on other people's schedules. So with my wedding being in September and all the weddings that I've booked that fall, it's not feasible for me to take a 10-day honeymoon immediately after my wedding.

I have two weddings booked in that span, so I’d have some super unhappy clients! So we decided to delay our official honeymoon until January, but we're doing a mini-moon the weekend after we get married, since we're getting married on a Thursday. So technically we’re doing two celebrations of our wedding in one year, but who says that’s a bad thing?

Personally, I told my fiancé that I think we should do a honeymoon every year so that we’re able to celebrate our relationship frequently (and also get free stuff – pro tip!)

You should also think about when seasonally you want to take your honeymoon. For example, if you live in the Midwest and you’re getting married in the spring or summer, but you want to escape winter, do that! You don't have to take your honeymoon immediately after your wedding. There are no rules when it comes to weddings – which I guess is my entire point when it comes to this series! So do what you want and get the best deal for it! Shop around and find the best price if you're not itching to go on a vacation immediately.

Ultimately, in four steps, you should:

  1. Figure out your schedule

  2. Figure out your priorities

  3. Figure out your budget, and then

  4. Find the best deals for your honeymoon
