Hey, folks! Jeff and Amanda booked me for a full couple’s portrait session at the Neon Museum (check out how to book your own portrait hour here!). The occasion? Celebrating their elopement in true Vegas fashion! And what led them to me? My style, which they described as “one part storytelling and one part Rock and Roll.” Hell yeah, peeps!

The storytelling aspect of what I do is why I fall in the category of a photojournalist-style photographer. It’s super common to see photographers describing themselves as “lifestyle,” “fine art,” and “photojournalist” photographers, but what do these words mean, and how do you know which is right for you? Here’s a quick rundown:

A fine art photographer is focused purely on creating and capturing the most artistic shot possible. They give very involved directions and set up specific shots for the sake of producing beautiful, artistic images. They will be super involved in your day and will do whatever it takes to get that perfect, breathtaking image.

A lifestyle photographer gives some direction and will set up specific shots for art’s sake, while also letting couples interact naturally, capturing the candid moments in between. Lifestyle photographers are great at capturing images you may never think of while also staying removed enough from the action to capture authentic moments with few interruptions to the flow of the moment.

And finally, my personal style: photojournalism! Photojournalistic photographers are involved as little as possible, letting the flow of the day or the session just happen. Their goal is to capture the most genuine images and let the couple live fully in the moment, focusing on documenting your day and capturing moments that are the embodiment of the emotions and memories you felt. Storytelling in photography is all about capturing the images that transport you back to the moment, no matter how much time has passed.
